Aston Villa Sign Ireland

Stephen has completed his transfer from Manchester City to Aston Villa for a transfer fee of £8 million on a 4 year contract

Stephen has completed his transfer from Manchester City to Aston Villa on a 4 year contract. Stephen spent eight years at Man City, having come through the ranks as a teenager.

He made 142 starts in that time, scoring 23 goals. His best premier league season in a Man City shirt came in 2008/09, when he was named as the Club's Player of the Year and was nominated for the PFA young player of the year.

Speaking on Stephen's departure,Man City manager Roberto Mancini added: "I hope things go well for Stevie at Villa. He is also a very good player, and he has played a big part in Man City's history. I think he will enjoy the change of being at another club, and I hope he does well for Aston Villa."

Transfer Windows

The transfer window is the period during the year in which a football club can transfer players  into their playing staff.

The English Premier League transfer window formally opens on 1 July, transfers between clubs in the same association can take place as soon as the last competitive fixtures for the season have been played. However, many transfers will not be completed until 1 July because many players' contracts expire on 30 June.

The Mid Season Transfer windows opens from the 1st to 31st of January.

Outside of the transfer window, a club may still sign players on an emergency basis, usually if they have no goalkeeper available. Special dispensation from their competition's governing body, for example the Premier League, is required.
