Bournemouth F.C. History
Formed in 1890 as Boscombe St. John's Institute FC and reformed in 1899 as Boscombe FC, and in 1923 became known as Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic . They adopted a red and black striped kit for the first time in 1970 before changing their name to AFC Bournemouth in 1972. In recogognition of former player Dickie Dowsett a new badge was introduced at the same time with the image of a player heading the ball.
But for a brief stint in the second tier in the 1980s, the club resided in the lower divisions before, in 2008-09, the Cherries narrowly avoided a fall in to non-league football. The Dorset outfit then began an amazing rise through the divisions. The 2014-15 season became the most successful in their history and ended by winning the Championship title gaining promotion to the English Premier League.
