Sunderland F.C. History

Sunderland was established in 1879 and has been a member of the Football League since 1890. The “AFC” stands for Association Football Club. Sunderland was one of the dominant football clubs in England during the 1890s, winning the First Division in 1891–92, 1892–93 and 1894–95. Sunderland was not as successful in the FA Cup, they were runner-up in 1923 but finally won it for the first time in 1937. Sunderland won their second F.A. Cup in 1973. They have won the league six times and the FA Cup two times. They have also been runners-up in the Football League Cup a final once.

In 1997, Sunderland moved into the Stadium of Light which was built on the site of the former Wearmouth colliery. Sir Bob Murray, the club`s chairman at the time it was built, said the name was chosen as a permanent tribute to the region's mineworkers and industrial heritage, and in the hope that the stadium would be a guiding light in to the future.
